Team-based Care for Low Back Pain: A Panel Discussion
Current management practices for low back pain, irrespective of the approach taken, have largely failed to control costs or improve clinical outcomes. In the U.S., the prevalence and costs of back pain treatment are high and increasing —but clinical outcomes are not improving. This panel session explores how restructuring the delivery of spine care, including team-based care, is necessary. Changing spine care delivery can help improve patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes and reduce costs. The panel reviews and discusses real-world case scenarios.

This .5-hour CE activity is designed for all clinicians who treat chronic pain.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Address how fragmentation and misdirected care, inappropriate incentives, and inefficient communication lead to poor outcomes for low back pain
- Explain how team-based, relationship-centered care can refine the approach to low back pain to produce optimal patient outcomes
- Explain how integrative care options can be pragmatically incorporated in a care plan

Robb Russell, DC, is a graduate of San Diego State University and the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, a component college of Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU). He practiced privately from 1982 until coming to SCU in 2012. He is assistant vice president, SCU Health System, and clinical chief of staff with administrative oversight of family and lifestyle medicine, sports medicine, fitness and human performance, diagnostic imaging, and spine care. He holds an appointment as an attending doctor within physical medicine and rehabilitation for the chiropractic residency program at the VA Medical Center, West Los Angeles.
Melissa A. Nagare, DC, LAc, received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. She graduated summa cum laude from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and College of Eastern Medicine at Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU). Following graduation, she practiced at a large, multidisciplinary clinic, and was also employed as an SCU faculty member. In 2012, Dr. Nagare was appointed SCU's chief clinical officer (CCO) and director of the University Health Center. She is currently serves as CCO and vice president of SCU Health System. Dr. Nagare has served as a director on the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP) since 2015. Her research interests include integrative health delivery models for spine-related disorders and use of integrative medicine approaches for improving health care costs and outcomes.
Clifford S. Lee, LAc, is a clinician (licensed acupuncturist in California) in the SCU Health System, based in the Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS) University Health Center at Whittier, California. He is also a part-time instructor in the College of Eastern Medicine within SCUHS, teaching acupuncture, herbology, and nutrition courses.
